Dying Cultures:

Kalash

Last week I wrote about one of the dying cultures “Maio,” I felt that I should write about some more dying cultures around the world. This week I am writing about another dying culture “Kalash” . Kalash is an area in the Hindu Kush mountain range in the North-West Frontier Province of Pakistan. Kalash has a very unique culture which differs from the culture of other groups in Pakistan. People of Kalash worship many gods and goddesses, such as god of crops, birth, corpes, etc. They have wooden and stone temples for these gods, where they often sacrifice goats, cows and horses for the gods. Kalash people do not burry they dead bodies under gound which is contrary from the rest of the country. They have different festivals in which thank their gods for the abundant resources of their three valleys, they do traditional dances in these festivals. They speak oldest Indo-European language.Their religion, language and traditions didn't changed due to their geographical location. World's highest polo playground is located in Kalash, surrounded by the most spectacular mountains in the world.

Their buildings have beautiful wood work, the columns have geometrical designs and the capitals are heavily decorated.

Kalash women wear traditional clothes which is long black robes, often embroidered with cowrie shells. Men have adopted the Pakistani shalwar kameez. They use vibrant colors, and geometrical shapes in their designs. Apart from cowrie shells, colorful threads are used to do embroidery, feathers, beads and different stones are also used.
